🏠 The Reality Check We Got While House Hunting

We spent a hot weekend in the Northeast house hunting. There were moments of excitement and daydreaming about the unknown. Moments of awe… and moments of frustration.

It’s always fun to imagine how your couch would look in someone else’s living room. We toured big spaces, little spaces—full baths, half baths—homes with a little room for the dog to run, and homes with a lot of room for the dog to run.

But throughout all the inconsistency in our real estate search, one thing remained constant: the prices.

Every home we looked at seemed wildly inflated—well above what felt like fair market value. And while it’s easy to point fingers and place blame for how we got here, the truth is… we’re here now. And no matter who or what caused it, there doesn’t appear to be a correction in sight.

In fact, quite the opposite. Some experts predict that home prices will continue to rise, as America’s wealthiest buyers scoop up inventory like it’s Monopoly money.

So where does that leave the rest of us—the people still chasing what was supposed to be the American dream?

If you can’t afford a home where you live, your options are limited.

  • You can stay with Mom or Dad—if they’ll have you.
  • You can live in a van down by the river (which, believe it or not, is a growing trend).
  • You can relocate to a more affordable part of the country.
  • Or… you can rent.

Renting is the most common choice for those priced out of the housing market. And unfortunately, most experts predict the rental market will only continue to grow as homeownership becomes even more elusive.

Yes, there are parts of the country where homes are sitting unsold. But in small, competitive pockets—especially within an hour of NYC—it’s a different story. Zillow says it’s a seller’s market. And investors, corporate landlords, and wealthy buyers are snatching up anything that hits the market.

That’s Why We Created RenterSupply.com

An online store curated specifically for renters—for people like us. To help you maximize your space, no matter how small. To help you create a home that works for your life, even if the walls aren’t technically yours.

You may not own the place. But it’s still your home. And we’d love to help you make the most of it.
